Security Key by Yubico – a device that allows users to log in without password

A partnership between Microsoft and Swedish Yubico allows Security Key by Yubico, a hardware authentication key, to be used to log in to Windows 10, eliminating the need for traditional passwords.

Yubico, a Swedish cyber security company specialized in secure authentication solutions, has revealed that Security Key by Yubico, a USB gadget that supports multiple authentication and encryption protocols, will support devices using Windows 10 and Azure AD. The feature is currently in preview for customers of the Technology Adoption Program (TAP).

With Security Key by Yubico and this support for Windows 10 and Azure, employees in an organization can safely connect to a terminal without entering a password. All you have to do is enter the Yubico security key to access all available services and applications at the chosen location or device.

The Yubico security key is available here and is also compatible with future systems that aim to operate without traditional passwords, using the FIDO Alliance security protocol FIDO2.

“Although multifactor authentication provides a necessary layer of security, most MFA solutions also require the use of a default username and password, which can be an inconvenient,” said Garrett Bekker, senior analyst at 451 Research, in a release. “The WebAuthn and CTAP client functionality in FIDO2 helps Yubico to offer a hardware-based MFA approach that is safer and easier compared to static login credentials.”

A safer world without passwords

Stina Ehrensvärd, CEO and founder of Yubico, told Computer Swden that the implementation of Microsoft’s Fido2 using Yubico´s security key is just the beginning of a password-free world. There is no limit to where this technology can take us. Passwords have been a painful problem for both individuals and organizations, but we have now developed a unified open standard that can finally solve the problem on a large scale

Alex Simons, director of program management at Microsoft Identity, says login without passwords means a major shift to billions of users. Both businesses and consumers, will log on to their Windows 10 devices and authenticate their applications and services based on Azure Active Directory. “We are excited to be working with Yubico to put an end to passwords.”
